Richard McTear Jr - A history of violence
McTear was already wanted for violating probation
TAMPA - Hillsborough County sheriff's investigators say Richard McTear Jr. did the unthinkable, throwing a 4-month-old baby out of a car window as he sped down Interstate 275.
His reaction after was arrested was as stone cold, detectives say as what he's accused of doing.
"It's a dirty game," Mctear said.
Off and on for six years, Louvena Cromartie dated McTear Jr.
"To kill a baby, four months didn't do nothing to you that's sick, a coward. No real man kills a baby. I don't understand that," Cromartie said.
The 20-year-old says McTear had a jealous streak that turned into rage if she tried to break off the relationship.
About a year ago Cromartie did just that and she says he beat her so badly he sent her to the hospital.
"I looked in the mirror this eye was closed shut but I could see out of my right eye and my forehead was three to four inches off my forehead I looked like a monster," Cromartie said.
Early Tuesday morning, investigators say McTear Jr. had a fight with his ex-girlfriend 17-year-old Jasmine Bedwell.
Detectives say he grabbed Bedwell's infant son, Emanuel Murray, from her arms and threw him to the pavement. Then they say McTear kidnapped the baby, threw him out the car window along I-275 at Fowler Avenue.
After hearing the tragic news Cromartie said she called Emanuel's mother, who kept repeating one haunting image.
"She said 'I can't believe he threw my baby out the window,'" Cromartie said.
Cromartie says about a month ago Bedwell told her she was ending her relationship with McTear, but never imagined it would cost her son's life.
"For her baby to be taken right before Mother's Day I don't know how she's going to make it through Mother's Day," Cromartie said.
*******
Jasmine Bedwell's family and friends tell the same sad story of death threats and beatings.
Her godmother, who didn't want us to use her name, said McTear had threatened the baby before.
"He told her last month that he was going to kill her baby. He had just beat her and was kicking her all in the face," Bedwell's godmother said.
Bedwell's neighbors said she was a good mother, despite her young age.
Letica Allard is Bedwell's neighbor.
"Most parents at 17-years-old are looking at their kids like they don't want to be bothered, or throw them off on anybody," Allard said. "She wasn't like that, she always kept her son."
Deputies say McTear was wanted for violating probation, and has a long record of arrests and violence.
Bedwell sought a request for protection from him, but the case was dropped when she didn't show up for a hearing Monday. There's no word on why she wasn't at the hearing.
Deputies and the State Attorney decided to charge McTear with first degree murder after the medical examiner said the baby died from injuries sustained after being thrown from the car.
McTear could face the death penalty.
Bedwell, who investigators say was beaten by McTear before he took the baby, was treated and released from Tampa General Hospital.
