Is America an Empire?

If to refer to the dictionary we will find different definitions of the word empire : "a group of countries under a single authority; "the British empire" a group of diverse companies run as a single organization a monarchy with an emperor as head of state the domain ruled by an emperor or empress" and if to explore the role of the USA in world`s economics politics and its influence on mass culture, we will find a lot of imperial features. Country which remains to be an empire nowadays is Great Britain, still it doesn`t have a lot of real "true" colonies, as most of Commonwealth members are independent, and British representatives do not play a considerable role in country`s ruling. But if to speak about the USA we will find out that it has and especially had a lot of possessions in the Pacific and in the Caribbean in past and remain to have them nowadays: Puerto Rico, Western Samoa. Besides, US military bases are situated all over the world and military presence of army and navy of one country on the territory of another defines dependence of the last one.

There exists such definition as imperialism, which actually has nothing to do with official definition of empire, but in general it has nearly the same meaning, under imperial rule the head of metropolis (a monarch or an emperor) rules over colonies, while during imperialism each side is independent from one another formally, but the financial corporations and financial interests of one country make the economics of another country dependent, turning it into financial colony. This definition is the most appropriate for the USA as its financial interests present in different parts of the world: in both Americas, in the Middle East, in the Pacific and in Europe as well. USA business plays a dominant role in control of the world economics, in setting prices on the products of the first need and in control of finances and distribution of them over the countries of the third world that play the role of resource donors for the USA and the first world countries.

The dominant role of NATO in solving of any question that has a military character and the leading role of the USA in NATO tells about its advantageous position on the arena of the world politics. Besides role in NATO it`s enough to remind the Monroe`s doctrine, which gave the right to solve any sort of problems in Western Hemisphere to none of European countries and actually it proclaimed the USA the only super power in the region.

The financial dependence of the most of South America countries from the price polices on their exporting goods also proves the imperial role of the USA. The US companies as United Fruits Company, Standard Oil and United Steel Company had been controlling economics of Latin America for years, as they had an influence on the politics of these countries and on their corrupted governments. Besides, the government of the USA had a protective policy over the financial interests of American corporations abroad and not once had proved it by interfering into the affairs of these countries and using weapon. It's enough to remind the intervention against Cuba at the beginning of the twentieth century, intervention in Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, and Grenada. Under the mottos of protection of democracy and rights of American companies, the US government established its military presence in the region and financial dominance.

We can not give single-valued answer is it good or bad that American imperialism dictates its order to the rest of the world.. But the imperialism and domination in the world help to achieve relative stability and normalize international relations. In this struggle, one who is weak has to submit to a stronger one, and work in cooperation; otherwise chaotic relations, chaotic trade and competition in the sphere of economics and prices on the products of the main need will prevent the world community from stable development and peace. The experience of the world wars had proved that.
